Job Market Report – REC and IHT Markit January 2019
This report is compiled by IHS Markit from responses to questionnaires sent to a panel of around 400 UK recruitment and employment consultancies (including the Ten Percent Group).
Main Finding:
Permanent appointments rise at slowest rate since April 2017 as the supply of candidates falls sharply leading to further marked increases in starting pay.
KPMG commented: “A lack of work ready candidates is really beginning to bite UK businesses and the situation is worsening. Many of the UK’s main sectors are now struggling to hire staff. It really is a candidates market at the
moment. “A lot of people don’t want to move jobs right now because there is so much uncertainty around. In addition, the supply of EU citizens entering the UK for work is slowing whilst every sector continues to take on more staff. This means a near-record number of vacancies are going unfilled and talent gaps in
industries like engineering, finance, and IT are opening up. If you aren’t looking forward to another year in your current job, now is a good time to go job hunting.”
The CEO of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) said: “It’s no surprise that growth in new permanent jobs dropped to its lowest level in almost two years last month, because economic uncertainty is now affecting companies’ hiring plans. But the underlying strength of our labour market is still there.”

Trip to Tanzania – Summer 2018
In August 2018 Julie Fagan, mother of Jonathan (MD of Ten Percent) took time out of a Tearfund working holiday to spend a week at St John’s Seminary in the Rift Valley in Tanzania. Donations in 2018
In 2018 we donated £2,500 to The First Step, a domestic violence charity in Merseyside, part of a 5 year commitment to funding projects there, £2,500 to Centre 63, a youth centre in Kirkby, again a 5 year commitment to pay for their IT, £2,200 to the Kilimatinde Trust in Tanzania for the continued support of 4 children in their education, £2,000 to the British Stammering Association for the maintenance of their telephone support helpline. We also donated £174 to Maeshafn Cricket Club in North Wales to part-fund a new cover and have loaned the club £480 towards the purchase of a new mower.
Funding Criteria
Here is the Ten Percent Foundation Funding Criteria:
The charity deals with a range of work that appeals to us.
The charity has no ulterior motive – eg religious teachings or political leanings.
The charity appears to do some good, does not hoard money or spend it frivolously.
The charity pays its staff a reasonable and not excessive level of remuneration. For us the level is £75,000 as an absolute maximum. We do not believe a charity, which by definition is dependent on donations and support from the general public, should be paying staff a higher salary than this level and we would only ever expect to see 1 or 2 members of staff on salaries of more than £60,000 in very large charities.
The trustees of the Ten-Percent Foundation are particularly interested in the following types of charity or worthy cause:
Charities that support small tangible projects in Africa.
Charities that deal with poverty and the effects of poverty in the UK.
Specific support for the education of children in Africa.
Support for stammering and in particular children affected by speech impediments.
Support for people who have Parkinsons.
Support for people who have had a stroke.
Charities working with ex-offenders.
Charities with links to the legal profession (we work in the legal sector).
Charities dealing with victims (and perpetrators of) domestic violence.
Charities dealing with youth work in areas particularly affected by poverty.
Animal conservation – in particular third world conservation.
Charities saving the rainforest by purchasing it.
Local sports clubs and organisations.
